This version addresses the “Out of Memory” boot problem. For whatever reason a small number of newer computers cannot boot kernel/initramfs images totaling more than 140MB. This is something a computer from the early 2000’s could handle. I have no idea how this helps their customers or what problem it solves. We also had to remove the fancy background in the GRUB menu for the same reason. Anything other than a simple text based menu will also trigger the “Out of Memory” problem in these machines.
READ: These fixes were backported to the Parted Magic 2022_09_04 downloads. Just log into your account and download it.
We also fixed a bug in Parted Magic Mount. It would have to be manually restarted after a flash drive was inserted into the machine.

There have been a few complaints about our Secure Boot bypass not working on some newer Win11 machines. We have updated GRUB and and the Kernel to address this. Parted Magic now bypasses Secure Boot on every machine tested. Refind was added to the GRUB2 menu in the Extras section. You’ll have to have Secure Boot disabled to use this.

This version of Parted Magic updates to Linux 5.17.1 and is based on Slackware 15.0. The package management app has been moved to the desktop. Any packages downloaded with the package manager will be added to your Save Session (if you use it) and will install on the next boot automatically. Now that we have a stable version of Slackware, I can start removing the big apps for the next release. If people want stuff like Libreoffice and VLC, it should be really simple to add them with the package manager. For now the ISO is still 2GB.

Parted Magic 2022_01_18 News
This version of Parted Magic updates to Linux 5.16.1 and fixes a few minor problems with the Secure Erase and NVME Secure Erase programs.
Manufacturers are starting to get a bit carried away with the length of names given to drives. The names are now limited to 15 characters, so the Secure Erase GUI should now fit well on everybody’s screen. If there is still any doubt to what drive is what, do a mouse over and the entire name will be shown in the tool tip.
We are using the bleeding edge NVIDIA 510.39.01 driver because it’s the only driver that will compile with the 5.16.1 kernel.

The 5.15 kernel now fully supports NTFS without the fuse driver ntfs-3g. We are sticking with ntfs-3g by default until user space tools like udisks are better supported. You can explicitly mount NTFS volumes from the command line.

The Parted Magic subscription service has arrived! This is the least expensive Parted Magic has ever been and offers far more value. First I would like to point out that nothing has changed with the One Year Subscription. If you purchase the $13 quarterly option, the subscription will run the entire three months even if you cancel right away. To cancel your subscription, you simply log into your account and click the cancel button. This isn’t any different than a Netflix/Hulu/Disney subscription. Now that we have this rolling release model, updates will be more frequent.

A major new feature has been added as well. Nwipe and a Secure Erase script called ata-erase has been added to the initramfs. This is extremely useful for headless systems and minimal setups. I don’t have any special boot menu options for these yet, but you can boot directly into the initramfs with the Initrd.img option from the FailSafe menu.
Parted Magic 2021_05_12 News
This version of Parted Magic once again updates 100’s of core programs and adds some new ones requested by users. I have added bcachefs-tools, but I was not able find a kernel patch for Linux 5.12, so there isn’t any kernel support.
There is also some other news. This is the last version of Parted Magic in it’s current release format. Starting with the next release (in about 3 months), Parted Magic will take on the rolling release model. The One Year Subscription will be mostly unchanged. The other option will be a subscription service for $4 a month. Why is this better? You will be able to pay $4 a month and get fixes and updates. This lowers the price from $11 to $4 if you only need Parted Magic for a single one off project. All you have to do is log into your account and unsubscribe at any time. This new model isn’t any different than Hulu or Netflix. If you pay the $4 and cancel, you still get updates for a month. I don’t see any downside other than if you lose your download after you cancel, you’ll have to pay again to get a new one. Once again this isn’t any different than Netlix. For example, if you cancel your Netflix subscription you don’t get the content the following month. In other words, backup your download of Parted Magic.

Parted Magic 2021_02_28 News
This version of Parted Magic is dedicated to my friend of 14 years. Furrgie was diagnosed with liver cancer in October. For the most part she seemed happy and healthy until February 12th. She was no longer able to eat and drink. On the 14th we made the decision to end her suffering. I truly miss my friend.
Notable changes for this release: Linux 5.11.2 with NVIDIA driver version 460.56. Forum member ven42 found a program buried on the internet called “Fred”. This is a perfect replacement for the old “pcregedit”. For what ever reason some newer computers cannot load a boot image larger than 250MB. Users would get a message “error: out of memory”. This was fixed by making the initramfs smaller. Duh. There was another memory error “Not enough memory to load specified image”. I’ve seen this on and off with computers for the past 10 years. I had a boot menu entry to fix this by telling the computer how much memory to use. Most people overlooked it or didn’t see it. Over the past month I just added mem=32G to all of the boot entries and so far it hasn’t caused a problem. Hopefully the memory errors are put to bed once and for all.

Parted Magic 2020_12_25 News
This version of Parted Magic comes with a huge number of package updates and improvements. Most notable is the upgrade to XFCE 4.14. I spent a lot of time tweaking the general look and feel. It looks significantly better than the last version. The boot menus have some changes so it’s easier for people the find the more common booting work-a-arounds. Fcitx has been added to further improve input support. A menu allows you choose between Fcitx and Ibus.
The old PXE version download has been discontinued. I highly suggest using the new method to boot Parted Magic via PXE: https://partedmagic.com/pxe/. If you really need to use the old slow PXE method you can build it with the included script: boot/pxelinux/pm2pxe.sh. There are two reasons for dropping the old PXE download. It doesn’t work near as well as the new method and 75% of all users are downloading it. I find it hard to believe that many people are using the ultra slow PXE booting method and it’s wasting a ton of server bandwidth.

Parted Magic 2020_10_12 News
The all new 64bit Parted Magic has been released. Every program has been updated or rebuilt, so there isn’t any point in listing the updated programs. You can take a look at what is included here: https://partedmagic.com/parted-magic-2020-10-12/
The amount of changes and added programs is quite substantial and I’ll go over a few of them.
Desktop is now XFCE and you can configure the crap of it now with GUIs and use the save session.
The NVIDIA drivers are used by default. This was a big gain moving to 64bit.
Lots of program requests that were not possible or problematic because of the 32bit system are now included. Libre Office, Wireshark, Keepassxc, VLC, etc…
This should put a smile on a lot of faces… International language support and man pages have returned. All languages supported by Linux should be available. Not a cherry picking of a few European countries. Ibus is also included. You’ll see the new entry in the boot menu to get this going.
The downside… The iso is now 1.5GB. I found some old laptops and tested the bigger Parted Magic. The one with 2GB of RAM worked just fine in Live Mode. Another one with 4GB ran just fine from RAM. Even the cheapest computers made in the last 10 years can still run this.
I’m sure I made a few people mad doing this, but I also made even more happy. As always, I hope version is better than the last.
Parted Magic 2020_08_23 News
This version has some major changes that might be a big deal to some people, but I don’t think it will be a problem for most users. I was forced to drop the 32-bit kernel after finding out syslinux has an initramfs size limitation. I will include an old version with a 32-bit kernel. You can download it from your file list. 32-bit was going to be dropped in the near future anyway.
32 and 64 was dropped from the boot menus. If you have a custom boot menu or PXE config, please make a note of this change. For example, m64.img was renamed to m.img.
Parted Magic no longer uses AUFS. The conversion to Overlayfs was nearly 100% done by D.L.C. Burggraaff. This means kernel updates will no longer be delayed waiting for an aufs patch.

Parted Magic 2020_02_23 News
This version of Parted Magic further improves the new PXE boot method thanks to forum poster pokorpa and adds boot menu entries for 4K monitors. I also reverted back to the Clearlooks Phenix GTK theme and the Oxygen 18 White mouse cursor. I believe it looks nearly identical to the 2014 version that everybody seemed to like.

I decided to move away from DPD for a download service and handle it myself. Parted Magic 2019_11_04 News
This version of Parted Magic adds SimpleScreenRecorder to record your screen and you can play the mp4 back with Mplayer. Targetcli-fb and tmux were also added. The scripts to download the ClamAV definitions has been rewritten to use freashclam and ClamTK has been upgraded to the 6.x branch. As always, we include the latest Linux kernel and a bunch of other updates.
I believe I am somewhat competent at editing videos now. Leave a comment in my latest backpacking video to let me know what the first Parted Magic video should be about. I would like to put out at least one video per week if I have enough input on what you would like to see.

Parted Magic 2019_09_03 News
This version of Parted Magic adds some new programs and boot menu entries. It also includes the latest Linux kernel and a bunch of other program updates.
On and off over the past year I have been receiving some complaints about disks not being detected by the Secure Erase GUI and NVMe drives failing to erase. I actually purchased some of these disks myself, and you know what, they erased without any problem. The users gave me no information on the system and just asked for a refund without explanation. Usually rude at that. Well, we figured out what the problem is over time. Windows 10, the user, or the vendor encrypted SMART. If SMART is encrypted, we can’t detect whether or not the disk supports Secure Erase, so it would show up as unsupported. Parted Magic now includes a GUI found in the Erase Disk menu to over come this. All you need to do is copy the PSID off the case of the disk, type it in the box, and press “Unlock”. Kind of a pain, but this problem cannot be solved by software alone.
I added a few new entries in the boot menus. The “Extras” menu includes a new entry so Hyper-V works out of the box. A new Failsafe entry was added to disable IPV6. In rare cases Network Manager would flip on and off. This was caused by a router claiming to be IPV6 and really being a IPV4. Since the kernel would load the IPV6 module, Network Manager would get confused.
On a side note, I would like to start making Parted Magic videos on Youtube. I downloaded Shotcut and have been learning how to use it with my backpacking hobby. For the most part I think I know what I’m doing now. My first video will probably be installing the iso file on a USB and then go from there. Parted Magic 2019_01_03 News
This version of Parted Magic updates some programs and adds a lot of improvements for recent Macbooks. The changes were tested on a 2013 model and a 2018 model. Graphics, mouse, and keyboard all work out of the box. No more plugging in external devices. Both models tested wake up from sleep before a Secure Erase is performed. We added READ-ONLY support for APFS to our mounter located in the panel. This is the best we can do for that file system at this time.

Parted Magic on USB Flash Drives
We are no longer selling Parted Magic pre-installed on USB flash drives. We are a small company and cannot afford the losses. These were always a non-profit service item to begin with. Almost all of the recent fraudulent transactions were from Southern California.

This version of Parted Magic adds some major new features to the Secure Erase programs. As always there are core updates and updates to various useful programs.
Total rewrite of the NVMe Secure Erase program.
Added logging to the NVMe Secure Erase program.
Added an ATA Sanitize GUI with logging.
An optional 10% verification pass was added to Secure Erase, NVMe Secure Erase, and ATA Sanitize.
An md5sum of the Advanced log is calculated and added to the basic log for verification.

Parted Magic 2018_08_06 News
This version of Parted Magic adds “Refresh Devices” to the main menu in the Secure Erase dialog. This is useful if you are hot plugging SATA drives. Also added new options to the boot menus for drives that won’t unfreeze. It just adds “libata.force=1.0:noncq” the the kernel cmdline.

Parted Magic 2018_04_30 News
This version of Parted Magic adds SpaceFM and support for Lz4 along with some other significant upgrades. I try to change the main menu as little as possible, but a few people had a concern that Veracrypt is not installed. The desktop file by default places the application in Utilities. I simply created a new category called Encryption. Veracrypt, TrueCrypt, and ZuluCrypt were added to that category. Hope this makes them easier to find. Thanks for using Parted Magic. Parted Magic 2018_03_27 News
This version of Parted Magic features new desktop wallpaper, Linux Kernel 4.15.11, GParted 0.31.0, and the typical updates you would expect. Parted Magic 2018_01_08 News
The Linux kernel has been updated to 4.14.11. I have received a lot of glowing reviews of the newer video cards it supports and it’s stability. The 2017_09_05 release was our most successful release to date with very little complaints. Instead of changing a bunch of stuff for the sake of changing a bunch of stuff, we basically kept it the way it was. We only addressed the little issues and updated relevant software.
GParted has been updated to 0.30.0.
I would like to do something different with the artwork though. If anybody out there would like to create something new, contact us. This is paying work.
